The Société Impériale de Thaumaturgie divides magic into five approved categories, or "avenues": Alteration (changing one type of matter to another type of matter, or one type of energy to another type of energy), Conjuration (creating matter from nothing), Divination (perceiving through time, space, or both), Evocation (creating energy from nothing), and Illusion (deceiving the eyes, the mind, or both). There are two additional avenues which the SIT has prohibited, and which carry a sentence of death for those convicted of using them: Diabolism ‎(communing with entities beyond the mortal world) and Necromancy (manipulating the forces of death and undeath.
